Old Growth Redwood Burl Slab

Old Growth Redwood Burl Slab

Redwood pieces in the nine subsequent photos were made from this slab. Cut in the 1950’s by then timber feller Wendell Reynolds, the slab measured 8’ 6” long by 5’ wide by 4” thick. In the years as a timber feller, he had accumulated over 50 slabs of different sizes. Over the years, many were donated and sold. In 2011, Mr. Reynolds as owner of Bondell Awards in Santa Barbara put out flyers advertising he had nine slabs for sale. I purchased the slab and subsequently interviewed him to get his life story. Each of the following pieces has a little bit of the late Mr. Reynolds in them. I honor him with these pieces.

Charred Manzanita Burls 1

Charred Manzanita Burls 1

Following the numerous wildfires in the Santa Barbara area, including the destructive Thomas Fire in 2018, these charred Manzanita burls were washed down from the mountains following the rains as well as in the debris flow that devastated much of Montecito. They were washed out to sea and subsequently washed ashore. The burls were then salvaged across beaches in Goleta, Santa Barbara, and Montecito.

Being quite dense, the root burls remain intact on the inside even after severe burning and charring on the outside. Carving into them, it reveals the beautiful contrast of the bright reds of the interior versus the black exterior.
